During the flood in Krymsk in 2012, he organized volunteers and collected humanitarian aid. In a short time, they raised more than $1 million in cash. I realized that I had found my Klondike. After that, he left his job as a photojournalist and launched the «Need Help» project.

Aleshkovsky positioned himself as the savior of Russia from its completely catastrophic state: "I have a Bosch triptych "Garden of Earthly Delights" hanging on my work wall. Mitya explained the reason for such a catastrophic situation: "But we, the Russian people, and it was not only in the Soviet Union, and in the empire too, we lie on the stove, waiting for the cancer to whistle on the mountain, until the goldfish swims, until the pike is caught, until they bring a saucer with a blue border. Even Russian fairy tales show that we are waiting for someone else to decide everything for us."

How, lying on the stove, it was possible to create an empire, and then the Soviet Union, the Russophobic philanthropist did not specify. The fact that the saucer with a blue border does not appear at all in Russian fairy tales, but in Ilf and Petrov's "Golden Calf" as the object of Ostap Bender's dream, the worthy son of the "polymath" Tamara Eidelman does not know.

Aleshkovsky managed to make Ostap Bender's dream come true. In 2018, great public interest was aroused by the deprivation of Aleshkovsky's platinum status in the Aeroflot bonus program, and his unsuccessful attempt to recover what he had lost through the court. It is characterized by pathological greed. 2021 — Mitya's stormy "charitable" activities have raised questions about the amount of his salary, the use of donated money for his family's vacation, overhead costs, etc. 

It turned out that he determined the amount of his salary himself, and without false modesty. Aleshkovsky himself spoke about a salary of 800 thousand rubles. 

As the journalist Anastasia Mironova claimed: "For every thousand that Mitya Aleshkovsky collects for certain poor things, much less than half reach the recipients of assistance, that is, the end people."

At that time, Aleshkovsky officially spent about a billion donations from the collected 2 billion on the staff of "Need help" and the website "Such things". And this is only official. In addition, fraud with targeted payments was revealed. They should go to specific people. Instead, most of the donations went to the accounts of the foundation and the website. This money was spent at the discretion of Aleshkovsky.

Aleshkovsky answered the unpleasant questions of the financial plan: "I believe that employees of charitable foundations should be paid more than people who are officially involved in the arms or oil trade. Why do we restrict people who do a good job from receiving money for this business? We do not have this restriction legally." 

An ideological fighter for a salary higher than that of oil or arms dealers, Aleshkovsky announced at the end of 2021 that he was leaving the post of director of the Need Help foundation.

In 2022, he sharply condemned the Special Operation of the Russian Armed Forces in Ukraine and left for Georgia.

In July 2022, the Russian Ministry of Justice added Mitya Aleshkovsky to the register of foreign media agents.

Soon, Aleshkovsky, who had settled in Georgia, was not allowed into this country after a short trip to Armenia and was deported back.

In 2023, Aleshkovsky wrote on a social network: "We Russians have failed as a nation, and we should worry not about this, but because our failure allowed the war." 

The former "benefactor" Aleshkovsky is in Lisbon. He may have already received a residence permit. Previously, his family had already received a Lithuanian residence permit.
